New English Hub Showcase Events Announced

The Outwood English Hub, based at Outwood Primary Academy Lofthouse Gate and part of the OIE network, has announced four dates across the upcoming academic year for its Phonics Showcase Events.

The events are supported by the Department for Education and are suitable for headteachers, principals, academy/school leaders, and multi-academy trusts leaders. It is recommended that Reception and Key Stage 1 teachers attend too.

The half-day events allow attendees to observe phonics teaching and find out how the Outwood English Hub achieve excellence in the teaching of early reading.

Catherine Wright, Director of Reading at the OIE, said: “We are delighted to announce the dates for our upcoming Phonics Showcase Events. They are a great opportunity for the staff at the Outwood English Hub to share how they are developing a reading for pleasure culture, while developing the teaching of systematic synthetic phonics.

“We hope to see many people there so we can work together to support schools to improve standards in reading.”

The Outwood English Hub team then deliver an informative presentation to attendees before a learning walk of the academy exploring the teaching of systematic synthetic phonics and the embedding of a love of reading.  They also offer support in creating an action plan to apply for hub funding and free support for you school.

Catherine added: “After each event, attendees will be invited to write an action plan to apply for hub funding and free support for their school. Eligible school can then apply for up to £6,000 of funding.”

All showcase events start at 9am and then will be complete by midday. Places are limited at each event, with schools able to send a maximum of two delegates. Attendees can claim up to £250 per school for travel and cover costs.

The announced dates are:

  • Friday 11th October 2019

  • Friday 6th December 2019

  • Friday 31st January 2020
